I believe in the power of short and concise instructional videos. As such, I will be publishing a series of videos where I address the basics of oil painting.

In this first video, I simply present the palette I use most of the time when I paint outdoors, or in my studio. My palette is a limited palette comprised of three colors:

French Ultramarine (blue)

Cadmium Red Medium

Cadmium Yellow Medium

Additionally, I use two other non-colors, since these don't have a specific wave length in the visible spectrum. Black is the absence of light and color, and white is the presence of all colors:

Ivory Black

Titanium White

The miracle of the limited palette is that you can mix any color you want, while it is easier to maintain color harmony. The gray colors obtained by mixing black & white provide endless opportunities to bend, and to de-saturate colors, which are much needed to create atmosphere.

My physical palette, both en plein air and in the studio is a neutral gray. In my studio I use a taboret palette.
